June 2019

Dear Parents,
It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school.

Language Arts
We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's Theatre.  The performances will take place the last week of school.  Please watch for a note in your child's agenda in the upcoming week to find out the date of our performances.
The next two weeks we will be doing our last spelling list.  Please ensure that your child completes his/her LCWC (Look, Copy, Write, Check) each night.  PLEASE make sure your child reads this summer!  This is the one activity that will help your child with his/her literacy skills and help to prepare them for Grade 6 next year.

Math
Our unit on Decimals and Fractions is half way through.  We will have a test before the end of the year and will begin a quick unit on Geometry after that.  Please remember to use the Mathletics account that your child has to practice the concepts learned in class.  It will be available to your child throughout the summer.

Science
We are learning about Weather and the different factors that affect precipitation, air flow and humidity in the air.  Along with our writing assignment in LA, we will have a test in the next two weeks on the concepts that were taught.

Social Studies
The final chapter will be studying the Arctic Region of Canada.  This always proves to be a fascinating topic as it involves the Inuit People who are well known for living in Igloos and using dog sleds.  It alway amazes the students to learn about the Land of the Midnight Sun and how some people enjoy living in such a vast and barren landscape.  Our final project will be to construct a diorama of one of the First Nations groups in a chosen area of Canada.

Relgion/Health
We are preparing to write the District Religion Exam next week.  We have been reviewing the concepts learned this year and covering some topics that were missed.  We will soon begin the Human Sexuality Unit.  It is included in both Religion and Health as God made us in His own image.  The grade 5 students are discovering what it means to be male or female and how this influences body image.

Art
We are completing a unit on Collage and Mixed Media.  The students use magazine paper and various non-traditional materials to construct works of art.

Drama
Mr. Johnson is winding up the year by having the students complete some fun activities.

Physical Education
Mr. Hagar and I have been teaching the students Track & Field events.  So far we have done long jump, Javelin and the 60m dash.  We will be doing some other running events and will continue to work on the ones already taught to help the students refine their skills.

French
Mrs. Howe is also winding down the year with some fun activities and reviewing the concepts learned this past year.

February 2019

Welcome to the halfway point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on what is taking place in the grade 5 class. Language Arts We are finishing our Narrative stories (Fiction) and will begin our Novel Study on Owls in the Family.  The stories take a long time as we work to improve our writing through editing and rereading.  We use rote memorization to help us study our spelling words.  Please encourage your child to use the words in a sentence.  This will help with their comprehension and will build their vocabulary for reading and writing.  Math We are at the mid point of our Multiplication and Division unit.  Some of you may be confused by the 'new' math.  This is not 'new' math but merely different strategies that help us to find other ways to find an answer to a problem.  Most of the time we use an algorithm (place one number on top of the other) to find the product.  It is okay to help your child as th

It's hard to believe how fast the months are flying by!  Please take a look to see what we are working on next. Language Arts We finished a Limerick Poem and a Concrete Poem.  A Concrete poem is sometimes known as a Shape poem.  The words are written or typed to represent the topic of the poem.  We have begun a Bio Poem which gives information to the reader about the author. We continue to work on Spelling, Reading and Writing in class.  Soon we will begin an Expository writing (non-fiction) unit.  Math Our unit on Measurement is wrapping up and we will have a test soon.  I will send home practice questions to help your child study for this test.  It will include the answers so that you can ensure that your child is understanding the concepts in the unit.  The next unit for Grades 4 and 5 will be on Fractions and Decimals; converting, adding, subtracting and multiplying.  Science The unit we are currently working on is Chemistry.  Students find this unit fascinating as we
