June 2018

Dear Parents,
Where has the time gone?  It's hard to believe that summer holidays are just around the corner. My apologies for the late blog.  This is a busy time of year for teachers as get ready for year end.  Please read the following to find out how we are wrapping up the year.

Language Arts
We completed a mini unit on Newspaper writing by learning about the components of a newspaper article.  We read some samples and wrote an article as a class.  The grade fives will look at this more in depth in grade 6.  We are finishing off the year doing Reader's Theatre in groups.  Please look at 'Important Dates' to see when we will be performing in class.
The next two weeks we will be doing our last spelling list.  Please ensure that your child completes his/her LCWC (Look, Copy, Write, Check) each night.

Math
Our unit on Decimals and Fractions will be completed this week with a test.  We will finish off the year with our unit on Geometry.  Please remember to use the Mathletics account that your child has to practice the concepts learned in class.  It will be available to your child throughout the summer.

Science
We are beginning a unit on Plant Growth and Changes.  This will supplement our previous unit, Wetland Ecosystems by focusing specifically on plants and what they need to grow.

Social Studies
The Glenbow museum was an exciting supplement to our units in the Grade 4 and 5 Social Studies program.  We ate lunch at Olympic Plaza and I was so happy to see that the students recognized the statues of the Famous Five!  If you don't know who they are, ask your child to explain it to you.  They should also be able to tell you why it was important for women to be recognized as 'persons'.  We will continue to look at the different events that shaped our province and our country; World War 1 and 2, the Great Depression and the arrival of immigrants from the many corners of the world.

Relgion/Health
Both grades are working on the Human Sexuality Unit.  It is included in both Relgion and Health as God made us in His own image.  The grade 4 students are learning about their body image and puberty.  The grade 5 students are discovering what it means to be male or female and how this influences body image.

Art
The students are experimenting with Pastels on coloured paper using a variety of techniques.  They look beautiful!

Music
This month, we are having fun by discovering the different genres of music (ie. Country, Rock, Classical, Jazz, etc.)  We have been listening to samples of music and describing the instruments we hear and how the music makes us feel.

Physical Education
Mrs. Lavallee and Mr. Hagar are winding up the year with a unit on Dance and playing a variety of cooperative games.

French
Mr. Silva is finishing off the term reviewing concepts learned throughout the year.

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. Language Arts We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's T...

Hello and welcome to the half way point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on the grade 4/5 class. Language Arts We have been working on our Poetry unit and have composed a Diamante and an Acrostic poem.  These will go towards our personal poetry collection at the end of this unit.  The students will bring these home when they are completed to share with you.  Encourage your child to look at poetry in our daily lives (greeting cards, song lyrics, etc.).  I invite you to have a discussion with your child about the language used in these poems (describing words, rhyming patterns, etc.).  Math We are continuing to work on our Measurement unit.  Both grades are looking at the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.  I encourage the Grade 4 students to continue practice telling time using an analog clock.  Make a point of asking your child what time it is when you see an ...
