February 2018

Hello and welcome to the half way point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on the grade 4/5 class.

Language Arts
We have been working on our Poetry unit and have composed a Diamante and an Acrostic poem.  These will go towards our personal poetry collection at the end of this unit.  The students will bring these home when they are completed to share with you.  Encourage your child to look at poetry in our daily lives (greeting cards, song lyrics, etc.).  I invite you to have a discussion with your child about the language used in these poems (describing words, rhyming patterns, etc.).

Math
We are continuing to work on our Measurement unit.  Both grades are looking at the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.  I encourage the Grade 4 students to continue practice telling time using an analog clock.  Make a point of asking your child what time it is when you see an analog clock and have them describe the time in various ways (ie. 4:15, a quarter after 4, etc.).  Area is so much faster to calculate for the grade 5 students who know their times tables.  Please practice if your child cannot recall the facts instantly.

Science
The students are having fun experimenting with the cars we constructed last month.  We have been studying axles, the effect of gravity and design of the car and how it relates to the function of a vehicle.  We also constructed a crane to learn about the function of a hoist in our world  .

Social Studies
This month we continue to look at the First Nations People of Alberta (Grade 4) and Canada (Grade 5).  We are learning about the different tribes and how they lived using the resources in their area.  Did you know that a Buffalo's stomach was used as a cooking pot?  The Grade 5 students are making a diorama of a chosen region in Canada.  I do not want money to be spent on this project so I encourage your child to be resourceful by finding supplies in the recycling bin at home or using leftover craft supplies that you may have lying around.  I can provide paint, glue, pipe cleaners and some wooden popsicle sticks and dowels at school.

Religion
The Grade 4 students are learning about The Kingdom of God and the season of Lent.  The Grade 5 students are focusing on reading Bible passages and responding to the scripture in order to prepare them for the Religion exam at the end of the year.

Physical Education
Mrs. Lavallee and Mr. Hagar continue to work on Basketball skills.

Art
This month, the students are continuing on with their unit on Sculpture.  They are making animals using toilet paper rolls, paint, fake fur, beads and a few other craft items.

Music
I have been covering Music Theory with the students so that we can start to compose some simple melodies.  The students will play these short songs for their peers sometime next month.

Health
The Grade 4 students are continuing their work on Bullying; roles in a bullying situation and strategies to use when dealing with the problem.  We will be moving on to Internet safety soon.  The Grade 5 students are continuing their study of personal safety within the school environment and outside of it.

French
Mr. Silva is teaching the students the months, days, years and colours in French.

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. May 2018

Dear Parents,     Thank you for all your prayers these past six weeks.  My father's illness and passing has been very difficult for me but I have been overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me during this time.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as I did not post last month.  Please read this post to see what we are working on in our class this month. Language Arts  We are finishing our Persuasive Writing essays.  This is a form of Non-Fiction writing in which the students must convince the reader of their argument.  Persuasive writing is a format used in advertising, magazine articles and in government.  The students chose a topic and have learned how to plan, compose and edit the final essay.  We also engage in some public speaking exercises in class where the students are given a topic and must persuade the class of his/her argument. Please continue to ensure that your child is working on their LCWC (look, copy,...
