January 2018

It is so good to be back!  I had a great week back and am slowly getting back into routines and getting to know my students.  Please read this blog each month to keep up to date on what we are learning in the Grade 4/5 class.

Language Arts
We have started our Poetry unit.  As well as composing a variety of poems, the students will be reading and analyzing poems using the SMILE (Structure, Meaning, Imagery, Language and Effect) acronym.
We will continue on with Spelling and Guided Reading.  Please ensure that your child continues to read each night.  I strongly recommend at least 30 minutes each night.

Math
Both classes have begun the Measurement unit.  The grade fours will be working on recording the date using the Metric format, telling time using an analog clock as well as using Metric units for measurement.  The grade fives will be using Metric units to explore perimeter, volume and capacity but will also focus on converting measurement units (ie. mm to cm, m to mm, etc.)
If your child is finding Multiplication too easy, start asking them division questions (ie. 'What is 36/6?' or 'What is 72/8?'

Science
Each grade will be looking at designing and understanding movement in devices and
vehicles.  The grade fives will be learning more specifically how electricity is used to power devices and vehicles.

Social Studies
This term the grade fours will be looking at the History and Stories of the First Nations People of Alberta while the grade five class will focus on the First Nations People of Canada.  In this unit we develop an appreciation for the contributions First Nations People have made to our country and our province.

Religion
We are leaving the Christmas season of the Liturgical Calendar and are returning to Ordinary time.  We learn about the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.  Lent will be upon us in a few weeks and we will begin preparing for the Easter season.

Health
This unit we will be focusing on personal safety around school, home and our community.

Phys. Ed.
Ms. Lavallee and Mr. Hager are working on Basketball skills and gameplay this unit.

Art
Ms. Teichroeb has had the students working on 3D art.  They are designing and building a project using construction paper.

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. Language Arts We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's T...

Language Arts We have been working on our Poetry unit and have composed a Diamante and an Acrostic poem.  These will go towards our personal poetry collection at the end of this unit.  The students will bring these home when they are completed to share with you.  Encourage your child to look at poetry in our daily lives (greeting cards, song lyrics, etc.).  I invite you to have a discussion with your child about the language used in these poems (describing words, rhyming patterns, etc.).  Math We are continuing to work on our Measurement unit.  Both grades are looking at the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.  I encourage the Grade 4 students to continue practice telling time using an analog clock.  Make a point of asking your child what time it is when you see an ...
