March 2018

It's hard to believe how fast the months are flying by!  Please take a look to see what we are working on next.

Language Arts
We finished a Limerick Poem and a Concrete Poem.  A Concrete poem is sometimes known as a Shape poem.  The words are written or typed to represent the topic of the poem.  We have begun a Bio Poem which gives information to the reader about the author. We continue to work on Spelling, Reading and Writing in class.  Soon we will begin an Expository writing (non-fiction) unit.

Math
Our unit on Measurement is wrapping up and we will have a test soon.  I will send home practice questions to help your child study for this test.  It will include the answers so that you can ensure that your child is understanding the concepts in the unit.  The next unit for Grades 4 and 5 will be on Fractions and Decimals; converting, adding, subtracting and multiplying.

Science
The unit we are currently working on is Chemistry.  Students find this unit fascinating as we explore matter (atoms and molecules).  We study how matter can be in three states (gas, liquid or solid).
We will learn about and discover different mixtures (solid/solid, solid/liquid, liquid/liquid) and how to separate some of these mixtures.  The students will discover reversible/irreversible chemical reactions and how to identify a base from an acid.

Social Studies
This week we are finishing our presentations of the dioramas that we made in class.  Each group was busy building a replica of the First Nations settlement before colonization.  We will begin looking at Canada's early history from several small colonies joining together in 1867 for Confederation.

Religion
The grade 5 class will be looking at symbolism in the Catholic church while the grade 4 class is discovering God's Kingdom.  Both grades will be learning about Lent and preparing for the season of Easter.

Physical Education
Mrs. Lavallee and Mr. Hagar have begun a unit on net sports.  The students are learning to play Badminton and Table Tennis.

Art
Mrs. Teichroeb is continuing with the Sculpture Unit and the students are currently making paper mache masks.

Music
We continue to work on Music theory and develop a sense of beat and rhythm in songs.

Health
Both grades will focus on safety this month.  Grade 4 will learn how to help teach younger children to be safe in the playground while grade 5 will learn some basic First Aid skills.

French
Mr. Silva is teaching the students about Family this unit.

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. Language Arts We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's T...

Hello and welcome to the half way point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on the grade 4/5 class. Language Arts We have been working on our Poetry unit and have composed a Diamante and an Acrostic poem.  These will go towards our personal poetry collection at the end of this unit.  The students will bring these home when they are completed to share with you.  Encourage your child to look at poetry in our daily lives (greeting cards, song lyrics, etc.).  I invite you to have a discussion with your child about the language used in these poems (describing words, rhyming patterns, etc.).  Math We are continuing to work on our Measurement unit.  Both grades are looking at the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.  I encourage the Grade 4 students to continue practice telling time using an analog clock.  Make a point of asking your child what time it is when you see an ...
