October 2018

Dear Parents,
We are well under way to another great year!  I am really enjoying this class and I hope your child is having just as much fun as I am.  Please read on to find out what is taking place in our class.

Language Arts
We have been working hard at our spelling words and Guided Reading groups.  We began the year with our unit on Narrative Writing and have started our first assignment, Monster Menu's.  This project will help your child develop his/her descriptive writing abilities.  They are to compose a menu for monsters that would make us humans sick to our stomachs!  The due date for this assignment is October 31st.  Your child will draft the rough copy at school and will then be able to spend some time at home working on the good copy if they choose.  I do provide ample class time to work on the assignment.

Math
Our unit on Patterns and Equations is nearing the end.  I anticipate that we will have our unit test the last week of October.  Some students are finding this unit challenging.  I strongly encourage them to spend some time on Study Ladder or Mathletics to practice their math skills.  It is not compulsory to work on these sites.  It is merely to provide extra practice for the families that request it.

Science
The circuits we are building by connecting wires to batteries, light bulbs and switches have been fun and challenging.  We are learning about open and closed circuits as well as what can cause a short circuit.  We will soon be finding out how electricity and magnetism work together and how they are used in our world.

Social Studies
We are beginning our unit on Chapter Two: The Atlantic Region.  We will discover how people in the maritime provinces live and how their daily lives are strongly affected by their proximity to the ocean.  This is the first of six chapters studying the various regions of Canada.

French
Mrs. Howe is the teacher for this subject this year.  She is a dynamic and exciting teacher who has begun the year with getting to know the students and teaching some simple phrases in French.  She is using a website called Duolingo.  This is a great way for your child to develop his/her French language speaking skills.  I will provide the website at the bottom of this blog.

Religion
Each student is composing a prayer as part of our Religion curriculum.  Our class is scheduled to do morning prayer the week of October 22nd-26th.  I will choose students who are eager to recite their prayer to the whole school and will let you know the dates the week prior.

Drama
Mr. Johnson is teaching this unit to the students and has begun the year with some activities to introduce the students to the art of drama.  In the future months, I will provide more information on the specific skills he is teaching.

Art
The first unit of the year is Drawing.  We are learning about various techniques such as experimenting with lines, shading and space to develop our skills.  This will help your child to feel more confident in his or her ability to represent an object on paper.

Physical Education
We are continuing to master our Volleyball skills by working on our forearm passes, setting and serves.  We will begin to put these skills to use by playing games on the court.

Health
Our unit on Healthy Living is well underway.  We have been learning about the different ways to keep our bodies healthy; good eating habits, exercise, ample sleep, staying hydrating and taking care of our personal wellness.  We recently had a visit from the school nurse to talk about personal hygiene.  She shared the importance of showering, brushing our teeth and regularly changing our clothes.

It was so nice to see you at Meet the Teacher last month.  Please feel free to email me or write a note in your child's agenda should you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rosalie Hnatick

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. Language Arts We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's T...

February 2018

Hello and welcome to the half way point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on the grade 4/5 class. Language Arts We have been working on our Poetry unit and have composed a Diamante and an Acrostic poem.  These will go towards our personal poetry collection at the end of this unit.  The students will bring these home when they are completed to share with you.  Encourage your child to look at poetry in our daily lives (greeting cards, song lyrics, etc.).  I invite you to have a discussion with your child about the language used in these poems (describing words, rhyming patterns, etc.).  Math We are continuing to work on our Measurement unit.  Both grades are looking at the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.  I encourage the Grade 4 students to continue practice telling time using an analog clock.  Make a point of asking your child what time it is when you see an ...
