January 2019

I hope you had a restful and enjoyable Christmas.  It is always nice to spend time with family and to appreciate our blessings during the Christmas season.  The first week back always feels long as it takes all of us (students and teachers) a while to get back into routines.  Please continue reading to find out what is taking place in our classroom.

Language Arts
Our Creative Writing unit is coming to an end.  We will soon begin a novel study called Owls in the Family.  As a class, we group read a novel and learn to use prior knowledge (what we already know) and discover new information to help with our reading comprehension (understanding).
We will continue on with Spelling and Guided Reading.  Please ensure that your child continues to read each night.  I strongly recommend at least 30 minutes each night.  This week, the students will have to complete a reading log that will be checked every Friday.  This will help me to track whether the students are reading books that are appropriate for his/her level.  Your child can also practice his/her reading skills and comprehension using Studyladder.com.

Math
We have begun our unit on Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers.  The students learn strategies to help them find the product (multiplication) and the quotient (division) for equations.  We will also be working on reviewing and perfecting the algorithms for multiplication and division (long form).
Please remember to have your child practice his/her math skills on Mathletics.com.

Science
It has taken a bit longer to collect the needed materials for our experiments.  These experiments will complement our unit on Mechanisms Using Electricity.  This is a fun way to see how electricity and magnets are used in our everyday lives.

Social Studies
This month we are finishing our chapter on The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Lowlands.  We will soon be preparing for our text on this chapter.  In the next few weeks we will be learning about the another region called the Canadian Shield.

Religion
We are leaving the Christmas season of the Liturgical Calendar and are returning to Ordinary time.  We learn about the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.  This leads us into the sacrament of Baptism.

Drama:
The students are currently working on practicing and performing skits in class.

French:
Mrs. Howe is teaching the students how to conjugate French action verbs.  They are playing fun games where they have to 'act-out' the French verb with their peers.

Health
This unit we will be focusing on Relationship Choices.  We are currently studying how we hide our true feelings behind other emotions.  Knowledge of this helps us in our relationships with others.  For example, some of us show anger when we are feeling frustrated.

Phys. Ed.
Our unit this month is Circuit Training.  Mr. Hagar and I are introducing the students to a new way of working out.  Circuit training works different muscle groups as well as improving your child's cardiovascular endurance.

Art
We are beginning the new year by working on Print Making.  We will be using a variety of materials to experiment with different ways to transfer an image from one media to another.

February 2019

Welcome to the halfway point of the school year!  The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on what is taking place in the grade 5 class. Language Arts We are finishing our Narrative stories (Fiction) and will begin our Novel Study on Owls in the Family.  The stories take a long time as we work to improve our writing through editing and rereading.  We use rote memorization to help us study our spelling words.  Please encourage your child to use the words in a sentence.  This will help with their comprehension and will build their vocabulary for reading and writing.  Math We are at the mid point of our Multiplication and Division unit.  Some of you may be confused by the 'new' math.  This is not 'new' math but merely different strategies that help us to find other ways to find an answer to a problem.  Most of the time we use an algorithm (place one number on top of the other) to find the product.  It is okay to help your child as th

Dear Parents,      It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this will be my last year at St. Stephen School.  I have accepted a new position at St. Joseph Elementary/Junior High this September.  I have spent nine years at St. Stephen's School and have loved it!  I have made so many wonderful memories here and will miss the students and staff terribly.   My decision to move to St. Joseph's School was solely based on the fact that I want and need to be closer to home.  It has been a blessing that I got to be your child's teacher.  I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful and amazing summer!  Please read on to find out about what it going on this last month at school. Language Arts We completed a unit on Expository Writing (Non-Fiction).  We read some samples and wrote a research paper on a topic related to our Weather unit in Science.  The grade five class will be finishing off the year doing Reader's Theatre.  The performances will take place the la

It's hard to believe how fast the months are flying by!  Please take a look to see what we are working on next. Language Arts We finished a Limerick Poem and a Concrete Poem.  A Concrete poem is sometimes known as a Shape poem.  The words are written or typed to represent the topic of the poem.  We have begun a Bio Poem which gives information to the reader about the author. We continue to work on Spelling, Reading and Writing in class.  Soon we will begin an Expository writing (non-fiction) unit.  Math Our unit on Measurement is wrapping up and we will have a test soon.  I will send home practice questions to help your child study for this test.  It will include the answers so that you can ensure that your child is understanding the concepts in the unit.  The next unit for Grades 4 and 5 will be on Fractions and Decimals; converting, adding, subtracting and multiplying.  Science The unit we are currently working on is Chemistry.  Students find this unit fascinating as we
