Welcome to the halfway point of the school year! The new year has been off to a great start and I am excited to fill you in on what is taking place in the grade 5 class.
Language Arts
We are finishing our Narrative stories (Fiction) and will begin our Novel Study on Owls in the Family. The stories take a long time as we work to improve our writing through editing and rereading. We use rote memorization to help us study our spelling words. Please encourage your child to use the words in a sentence. This will help with their comprehension and will build their vocabulary for reading and writing.
Math
We are at the mid point of our Multiplication and Division unit. Some of you may be confused by the 'new' math. This is not 'new' math but merely different strategies that help us to find other ways to find an answer to a problem. Most of the time we use an algorithm (place one number on top of the other) to find the product. It is okay to help your child as they work on the steps for multiplication and division. You share your knowledge with them and are helping them to develop confidence in solving challenging questions.
Science
This month we have begun our unit on Chemistry. This is a nice transition from our Electricity and Magnetism unit. We previously learned how atoms transfer electrons to produce a current of electricity. Now we will learn how atoms combine with different atoms to make up matter and substances. We will learn through a variety of classroom activities and experiments. The Electricity experiments are still taking place but at a slower pace. Some of them proved harder to replicate than what we had seen on the Internet. A big thank you to Mr. Sheldrake and Mr. Babisz for providing materials and/or knowledge towards helping me complete these experiments!
Social Studies
In our next chapter, we will be learning about the Canadian Shield. It is the largest region in Canada as it covers five provinces. Our field trip to Heritage Park on the 21st will enhance our learning by discovering life in Early Canada and Alberta by learning about ways of life and the First Nations people in our region.
Religion
We wrapped up our unit on the Christmas season which falls partway into January as we learn about the Baptism of Jesus and the Epiphany (The visit by the Wise men). The students will work on an assessment project to demonstrate his/her learning. They will make a game that will require questions for the players. This is a fun and interactive way to review what has been learned.
Physical Education
Mr. Hagar and I will be working on Basketball skills and basic game play this month.
Art
We are continuing to work on Print-making. We completed a crayon transfer assignment and just recently finished a cardboard print using ink and rollers. We will continue to experiment with a variety of print making activities such as using potatoes to make our own stamp.
Drama
Mr. Johnson is continuing to have the students work on their plays. They are getting ready to perform the skits for their peers. Please ask your child about his/her play and the role they are performing.
Health
Last month we began to talk about Relationship issues. We are currently focusing on our emotions and how they can be misread. For example, sometimes we appear angry when we are frustrated. This can cause problems with friends and family if they don't understand our true feelings. We will talk about using constructive communication to solve issues with those closest to us.
French
Madame Howe has had the students make a poster advertising a lost pet using French vocabulary. The students are enjoying this hands-on project which uses the words they have learned in a meaningful way.
